Disney World Dining for UK Visitors: Reservations, Tipping, Portions & the Dining Plan
Eating at Walt Disney World involves more admin than eating anywhere else on earth, and a set of American conventions that British visitors are rarely warned about. Nobody explains tipping properly. Nobody mentions that a starter is a main. Nobody says that the good restaurants are gone 60 days out.
So — here’s the translation.
Three rules to remember
Reservations open 60 days before arrival at 6am Eastern (11am UK). Tip 18–20% at table service, always. Order fewer meals than people for young children, because the portions are enormous.
How dining reservations work
Disney restaurants are booked through the My Disney Experience app, and the booking window is the thing to get right.

The restaurants that vanish within minutes are, predictably, the ones with characters and the ones inside Cinderella Castle. If those matter to your family, treat the 60-day morning as an appointment.
If you miss out, keep checking. Cancellations appear constantly, particularly around 24–48 hours before, when Disney’s cancellation charge kicks in and people drop tables. Checking the app twice a day in the week before your trip genuinely works.
Tipping, properly explained
This is the one that trips British visitors up most, and it matters because restaurant staff in Florida are paid a lower base wage on the assumption that tips make up the difference.
- Table service: 18–20%. Not a rounding-up. Not optional. Calculate it on the pre-discount total.
- Counter service: no tip. You collected your own tray; nothing is expected.
- Bars: $1–2 per drink, or 18–20% on a tab.
- Housekeeping: $3–5 per night, left daily.
- Bell services and Minnie Van drivers: a few dollars.
- Large parties: a service charge is often added automatically for groups of six or more. Check the bill so you don’t tip twice.
Crucially, the Disney Dining Plan does not include gratuities. If you’re on free dining with several table-service meals, budget £200–£300 separately for a fortnight. This surprises somebody every single year.
Portion sizes
An American main course is roughly a British main course and a half. This is not a joke about America; it’s a planning fact.
Practical consequences:
- Two small children can share one adult meal at counter service, comfortably.
- Children’s meals are generous and often come with two sides and a drink.
- You can order a children’s meal as an adult at most counter-service locations if you want something smaller.
- Starters are frequently enough as a light meal.
Over a fortnight, a family of four that shares sensibly can eat for meaningfully less than one that orders four of everything.
Is the Disney Dining Plan worth buying?
If you’re getting it free through Disney’s UK offer, absolutely use it. If you’re paying for it, the sums are tighter.
The plan roughly breaks even for a family that eats a table-service meal most days and doesn’t mind eating at Disney every night. It loses money for families who self-cater breakfast, skip starters and puddings, or eat off-property.
Where it genuinely wins:
- Character meals — expensive à la carte, one credit on the plan.
- Signature restaurants — two credits, but often a £60+ meal.
- Teenagers — who eat adult portions and order everything.
- Budget certainty — it’s all paid before you fly, which many families value more than optimising the last £100.
Where it loses:
- Small children who don’t eat much
- Families staying off-site with a kitchen

- Free ice water at any counter-service till. Just ask.

- Bring your own food in. Disney allows it: snacks, sandwiches, soft drinks. No glass, no alcohol.
- The refillable mug is only usable at your resort, not in the parks. Worth it for a long stay, useless for a short one.
- EPCOT’s World Showcase has the best food on property and the best odds of a walk-up table.
- Book one nice dinner with a fireworks or Savannah view. It’s the meal you’ll remember.

Can we get a table without a reservation?
Sometimes, especially at EPCOT and at odd hours. Use the app’s walk-up waitlist from 7am on the day. But don’t plan a whole holiday around it.
What’s the cancellation policy?

Are dietary requirements handled well?
